Can Anyone Explain What This Is?

I was taking apart an Enfield I recently received to give it a once over and a good cleaning. As I removed the stock and started to clean off the dirt, I spotted a marking that I have never seen before. Below is a picture, has anyone ever seen this before?

I reckon it says B 3a B A SHIFT. So perhaps the repairing depot and shift? Looks like its on the lower stock, on the top edge, under where the ejector screw would be, and I assume its a No.4

Here is a better picture to show the location and what it looks like to me. Brit plumber is correct, it is off of a No4 MkI Savage (one of the dirtest rifles I have ever rec'd). It may or may not matter, but it did spend some time in India.

Since it is difficult to read the text box in the picture, here is what it looks like to me: B 3A B A SHIFT

Love that dirt!!! Ya never know what you're gonna find underneath it all. It's sort of like scratching a lotto ticket off, just might be a real winner.

Off the top of my head, I wouldn't say that shift relates to a factory shift as there'd be thousands of 'em out there! I think that this is very probably some out-in-the sticks Police Station rifle that belongs to one of the shifts that work there. Only my guess....................... The language of the Government in India is still English
