Mosin 38

Looking to buy one of these or a 44. Does having a counterbored barrel detract from value/usefulness of rifle. I'd prefer one of the pristine Polish 44 models but always seem a day late when I come across one. I bought 200 rds of what was described as heavy ball and am keen to try it out.Thanks.

My 38 has a counterbored muzzle, and it doesn't really seem to affect the accuracy. It isn't quite as accurate as my 44, but I attribute that to the 44's bore just being less worn. Both of them will smack our 200 metre gong with no problem. The 38 is a nicer carbine, I think, but only because it doesn't have the bayonet. It all comes down to your own preference, do you like having a bayonet on your gun all the time? My 44 feels heavier than my 91-30!

I have a bunch of both M44's and M38's The only thing I've found when shooting them is the 44's do a little better with the bayo pointing towards the target. I also have a mint Pole 44/51 dated, haven't had time to shoot it yet but, if it shoots as good as it looks, I'll be pretty well off. The wood looks a lot like artic birch, kinda strange-SDH

It's probably beech if it's a Pole.

Could very well be beech,I've gotta get better pics of certain woods. On a recent purchase (41B) I can't tell if its mahogany or walnut. I'll let you figure this one for me as soon as I get the pics up.

As far as the counter bore goes, sometimes it really helps the accuracy and really should not effect the collector value too much. It is a ligament part of the Russian re-build program.
