    D.d.e.

Just got home from a 30 day ride around the country. While in Mass. I stopped by the Springfield Armory for a day.

I didn't know that during their existance up to 1968 they had made a prsentation gun for each President. On display was an M14icon marked D.D.E. Pretty cool I thought.

Didn't say he didn't. Is it any cooler then any other Presidents presentation? For that matter I'm sure Johnson had one too.

As I said, they stated they made one for each President up to the time they were closed in 1968. But this was the one they chose to display.

Since they were closed by Robert Strange McNamara who was appointed by JFK, who knows??? It's been strongly suggested that McNamara was asked to leave by the sitting President (Johnson). But we do not get into politics here. I was just showing a picture of a presentation rifle. It just happened to be for Dwight D. Eisenhower a 5 star General of WW2 who later became our President. I didn't pick it, just took a picture of it.

    Not M1

If I see correctly that is an M14icon.

JFK was from Massachusetts, and had been a Representative and Senator. He had no intention of closing down the Springfield Armory and without him it might have been closed sooner. After his death, there was no political influence to keep it open. RSM was a very bright man but he came from the Auto industry and tried to reduce expenses by making one size fit all. Say what you will about the M16icon but it has been our service rifle longer than any other one has been.

Phil, I'm confused. What was it about Jim posting a photo of Eisenhower's M14icon that caused such a caustic reply? I'm old & easily confused, but I thought that was a really neat photo.

M14 is correct, top rifle in this full picture.

    Rick,
You are by Denver. I went through the Eisenhower tunnel at 11,158. Icy with snow and 31 degrees on May 22. I didn't have chains, not fun.

    Phil,
Do you have a picture of JFK's rifle? Any presentation rifle is cool to look at.

We're on the western side of the rockies, known locally as "the western slope." We have had a most miserable spring this year, with the mountains getting tons more snow than usual (whatever that is). Trips from here to Denver are frequently a challenge, even in the middle of summer. We try our best to limit our trips to Denver due to the weather issues. Las Vegas is further away, but usually an easier drive.

Well I see we are a sensitive bunch? I ment nothing by my post, the DDE M14icon is a cool rifle and yes I can tell them apart M1 vrs M14, I just wanted too say that JFK also had a presentation rifle as well and that it was a M1 nothing more and nothing need be implied. I believe that most President's were/have been given Brooks rifles.

Ya know, sometimes it's hard to communicate the attitude behind the post on Internet forums. Perhaps we can cut each other a little slack and continue on without ratcheting up. Play on!
