    Yep , chopped down cloth ammo belt from a M1917 or M1919 Browning machine gun. Funny , I was just talking about seeing these used before , and here's one.

    Because carbine ammo didn't come in bandoleers, these guys tried everything to have quick access. Additionally, the magazines may have been in short supply at this time. I can see some guy who has just had his carbine go "click" and want to have at least one round to shove into the chamber while he gets out a mew magazine.

    Also the WW2 ammo came in boxes . The strippers are post WW2 inventions.

    When my older brother was in Vietnam, he had a 1911 and a handmade belt that held 45 cartridges besides the extra magazines. He was an O-3 and ran a POL point for choppers on the Cambodian boarder. I must be getting old. The two guys in that pic look like kids!
