    1917 US Enfield

I feel I have done quite a bit of research on this rifle as I own one and love it. The thing that is bothering me about it is that it's supposed to weigh about 9lbs empty however mine which is all 1917 parts and totally empty weighs 10.6lbs and I have no idea why. Any ideas as to why its that much of a weight difference in it?

Too many coats of varnish, or mabe it's just the weight of the world bearing down on it.

It doesn't appear to have all that many coats of varnish on it. I thought they were supposed to weigh 9lbs empty.

I'm sure there are so many differences between them that they aren't "supposed" to all weight the same.

    Lead slug in butt?

    This is a serious suggestion:

Remove the buttplate and take a look to see if a slug of lead has been smuggled into the butt to increase the weight and reduce recoil for target shooting.

The actual weight empty is 9lb 60z, if you add a sling then you are very near 10lb, add to this the many years of oil soaking into the timber, I'd consider myself lucky that it does'nt weigh more.

Now, out of curiosity, I'm going to have to go and weigh mine.
