No 4 Mk 1 - inverted A

Just looked at a Nr4 Mk1 and the receiver had what looked like an inverted A stamped above/encroaching on the rifle number between the letter and the 5 figure number.

Does it mean anything or just ?

Could it be that it's actually the serial number prefix of AV xxxxx

I don't have access to it at present.

I believe one series of rifles was number prefixed by AV as you suggest and another series number suffixed by AV - but I am pretty sure that neither is the case here.

The inverted A is fairly pronounced but looks most like a striking of its own(if that makes sense!)
