    M1 Buttplate… Real or Repro.

I bought this buttplate at a show last weekend, after getting it home and looking over my reference material I have a feeling that it is a reproduction. What do you folks think ?
    Thanks for your help.

It looks like a newer production and may even be NOS. It is post war as evident by the rounded plunger face.

It does not look like USGI to me.

The checkering looks crude and uneven. The bolt holes are offset (WRA butt plates are the only ones I have seen with offset holes, but that certainly is not a WRA butt plate). The bulge over the trap door hinge pin does not look like bulge on any SA, HRA, or IHC butt plate that I have seen. The very top of the butt plate where the checkering ends and the edge folds over is not smoothly rounded like a USGI butt plate. You can see a line where it is folded over. Just looks like a cheap copy to me.

It should be labeled, but reproductions are not necessarily a bad thing. It may not be as pretty, but I am encouraged to see any M1icon Garand parts back in production and again available for purchase sixty years later. Now if people would be honest about the origins of the part they sell, all would be well...... I would rather use a new production part on a shooter than a perfect original - because they aren't making any more originals, and I can use the new part hard, as was intended. CC

Very few new GI buttplates exist today. They were made in South Korea about 5 years ago with a big problem of fit. The maker corrected the way they were made, and today they are all over the market. They fit fine.

Originals in New Condition are very difficult of find. Many, in the past, were in original packaging.

Prices are also different. These "Brand New" repros are all over the Pennsylvania gun shows selling for $19.00 - 25.00.

I had an original in a US GI re-pack dated early 1970'S and it sold for $45.00 about two years ago.
