M84 scope dovetail rings, 1 inch rings too big, what can I do?

I have a Gibbs 1903A3 with a M84 7/8" (?) scope mounted on it, the rings fit fine however I need slightly higher rings as the bolt handle even though it is milled rubs against the rear of the scope. If I take the rubby eyepiece off it works fine, the clearance is that tight.

Does anyone make single dovetail rings that will fit the M84? or is there an adapter that can be put in a 1 inch set of rings?

Ben Have you tried shifting the scope in the rings? I have, at different times mounted my M84 on my A4 with the windage turrets either between the rings or ahead of the front ring. The eye relief seems to be relatively non critical although i just like it better with the turrets ahead of the front ring.
Finding 7/8" Redfield rings in on-standard heights is likely to be tough. Even the 7/8" GI rings and reproductions are hard to find.
You might complain to Gibbs. If their bolt had been a really faithful replica this wouldn't be an issue.
Another possibility would be to grind som additional clearance but that would be the last resort.

    Regards,
    Jim

I currently have it mounted with the turrets between the rings, I like the eye relief when the ring is ahead of the turrets, but then it really doesn't want to let the bold work.
I was just thinking that since the clearance is so tight, it rubs on the rubber, that if I back off on the screw on the left hand side, shifting the scope clockwise will the crosshairs have enough adjustement to handle that? This weekend I am using it in a benchrest shoot, so after that I may try doing that to see if that will work.
I shoot this at 50 and 100 yards exclusively since that are the only distances at the clubs I shoot at. It wouldn't take much to make that work, I will try that first.

could be a bolt issue. iv seen some pretty cheasy bolt handles made by Gibbs, post a rear picture of your bolt, in the rifle as it it is lifted all the way up.

Here is a picture of the bolt one with it touching the rubber and one just beyond the scope, if I remove the rubber then it has about a 1/8-1/4 inch gap to slide by, but the scope looks better with it on.
If it had rings that where 1/8-1/4 higher it would also slide by. that is why I am going to try unscrewing the rear ring base, the front is the dove tail and shifting it slightly to the left side by a 1/8 inch and see if there is enough "play" in the windage in the scope

Attachment 27436yup, thats a bolt issue..
i make a real nice A4 replica bolt,,that should clear that with out an issue, and my handle comes with a lifetime guarantee, if it breaks off, i fix it, or replace it.
though not cheap, it will fix your problem.
i have one listed on GB right now, or you can contact me direct if you like
    heres my replica bolt.

I will check out the one you have on gunbroker, I have hear that when you replace a bolt you can have headspace issues, what is the story on that?

According to Gibbs Website they have or are coming out with replica A4's equipped with M82's or M84's. If you bought one of these then it's a warranty issue that Gibbs should fix. On the other hand if you put your own M84 on in place of the Gibbs M73B1 replica then Chuck's solution might be best.
Original A4's were designed to work with both the Weaver 330C (M73B1) and the Lyman Alaskan which has a larger eyepiece. They have more generous clearance than Gibbs may have allowed particularly if its one of their early conversions.

    Jim

I tried moving the rear mount to left to clear the bolt but there wasn't enough play in the windage to center the crosshairs again. What I did was take the rubber eyeshield off the scope and it works fine now. The only downside is that it doesn't look as good.

I am going to put the M73 back on and see which one I like the best.

headspace shouldnt be an issue with a new bolt, i use new BF , CC bolts , i funtion test, headspace check with a rifle that has a new barrel, if the bolt doesnt headspace with your rifle, then return it, and ill send another.
