M1 bayonett without a guard - need help

I have just the blade of an AFH bayonett with the 2 holes in the tang. Has anyone had experience installing a guard? What should I use for the pins in the holes?

The pins have to be soft enough to flare into the opening. They aren't that hard to begin with but they aren't say...nails. On the other hand I wouldn't use a drill bit either. Something in between. I was lucky and had the original pins to work with. The hardest part I think will be getting the correct size.
