Colt Model 1911

It has been around the block a few times. Serial number is No 577217, heart shaped cuts in grip frame. Unfortunately the US PROPERTY has been removed from frame. It has what appear to be the correct grips, smooth flat MSH. Slide has Patent dates up to AUG 19 1913 prancing colt logo and then COLTS PTFA MFG CO HATFORD CT USA. It has been parked but the slide stop, safety lever and hammer are blued and fine checkered. It has a two tone mag A stamped on toe. It came with a brown leather holster stamped G&K 1918. Barrel is stamped on under side small G. It was priced right and will be a decent shooter...too bad about the gone missing PROPERTY marking though.

After counting the rows of checkering..one grip panel is Colt the other is Remington.

Both grips are probably Colt. Late in 1911 production Colt started using 13 row grips. This is a 533000 range 1911.

According to the pics on CoolGunSite the mag is WW1 American Pin.

I am having second thoughts about the park finish. It looks more like the original finish turned to plum and none of the roll marks appear to have been buffed..still sharp and crisp.....but the other parts are still bright blue. The top of the barrel is marked with the HP sharing a common leg...and there is also the small G and what might be an N or a Z stamped on underside of barrel. I will have to post some pics later. I just posted some pics on the US Military forum on GunBoards..not very good light but might get some feedback.

How/where do I count these rows? Never seen any explanation how to do it right

Start at the tip of the bottom diamond and count up to the tip of the top diamond. Use your mouse pointer on the picture I posted.

On the fully checkered Colt wood grips, you start at the top of the lower grip screw and count up to the bottom of the upper grip screw.

Not sure I am following you, but the rows are parallel, but the diamonds are off set, so the easiest way to count them is to zig-zag from diamond to diamond. Did you get a different count going zig-zag or parallel?

It makes a difference if I just count the number of rows which are between the two diamonds. But to make the story short, I counted zig-zag and it's 13 so I guess this is the way to do it, thanks!
