Bavarian carbine price ?

Hello all,
Not an expert on carbines, just a casual collector. Well anyway, I was in the local toy store recently and they had 4 carbines on the rack that were brought in on consignment and one caught my eye . It was one of the bavarian rural police carbines that was in exc. condition and seemed to have all the proper markings etc. It was a beauty. Needless to say I was ready to swoop on it till I looked at the price tag which was $1750 !! I was shell shocked over this lofty price (at least for my meager gun budget).
Are these type carbines going for this price or is this guy way out of line on his asking price ??
I know prices have gone up but this seems a little crazy. Funny thing was that the other 3 carbines from the same person were nice ww2 rebuilds and were priced reasonably. Ended up buying a nice QHC for $600 , but still had my eye on that bavarian !

I think your right about the price but right now it's what ever the market will bring as some people have more money then sense.

Wot? A Werder in a toy store??? (Think it´s about what you´d pay for a medium quality one here. After all ... it was the first military issue metal cartridge rifle and once you´ve seen the mechanism, you´ll realize that it´s worth quite a bit).

Bruce is correct - Bavarians usually bring a small premium over a 'otherwise, same as' but that's out of line in my opinion. For that price you can get all original US configured carbines which would be much more desirable to me.

But as you said, if it looked that pretty the seller might be hoping to snag someone. The value of any collectible has trends or ranges that most sell for, but it does come down to how much someone is willing to pay for what they want. It's not uncommon to see Bavarian that look nice. The Germans took better care of their carbines than other countries the US loaned them to and many were nicely blued.

It's funny to me how collecting markets are, and how quickly they change - just a few years ago Bavarians were kind of looked down on as any import marked carbine but all of a sudden they became desirable to some people so the price jumped. Personally I much prefer carbines that are configured as they would have been in American military hands - either WWII or post war arsenal updated than the Bavarians with all their changes, but to each his own and I respect others desires about carbines.

I agree with you , I would have been willing to pay a slight premium for the bavarian model, but that was way out of my price range. I normally am not interested in import marked carbines, but this one was so darn perty !!. Now I have my next challenge , to find one in like condition at a more realistic price. Thats half the fun of collecting.
I'm headed to the large harrisburg pa. show this weekend and will keep this on my want list. Nothing like a new carbine for christmas!!

There's basically two ways to post photos here. One is to upload them to Photobucket or some other host site, and then copy and paste the URL.

The other is to navigate to the photo and upload it here directly. Both ways are fairly easy once to do it a couple of times.

There is a huge following for the Bavarian marked carbines. To me it is just another version of an imported carbine coming back to the US. Maybe better condition. Some with the front sight ears cut off, stamped or etched on all parts, blackened metal. You didn't say what maker it was. Rock-Ola, S'G', IP? Rare stock? Maybe it is worth that price for other reasons then just being a Bavarian marked? If not, $1750 seems pretty high.

As has been said "To each his own". Personally, and that's all it is, I would rather have a US arsenal rebuild then a Bavarian or any other import.

Maybe stubborn country pride from fighting for it.

I hope this isn't considered too political for the forum.

I am Red, White, and Blue through and through. Spilt blood, lost friends along the way. So I collect American made small arms.

I meant no disrespect to any countries people in any way. If I have offended you, I apologize.

I am talking about weapons. My idea of a collection of US made and used weapons. I feel that the Bavarian marked carbines are just another version of a carbine imported back to this country. I personally don't like the the rural police or forestry markings on all the parts. I don't like the "Fat" stampings on the Greek returns. I didn't like the "Blue Sky" markings back in the 80's. To me those are not intended changes designed or implemented by the US. I would rather have "my" collection of American arms without them. For that matter I didn't like the TVA marked carbines. I hate sporterized carbines. And I don't like the double spring commercial carbines.

Back when I first started I had an MP-40, and some P-08's. Since sold. I would not have wanted US markings on any of them either. My military collection is now only US arms.

So again, no disrespect intended towards anyone. I'm talking about inanimate objects, carbines.

my respects to you and your service for your great nation! If there is a need to apologize than it is on me to do that, for my not easy to understand kind of humor that leads you to write this! Sorry for that!

It is good to be proud of your nation and the products they´ve made. And i can follow your thoughts about the really deal with items ( Carbines) made in the USA and left in original conditions. The same is here with the K98k. Most people like the German made more than the Czech made or others. Strangely the bavarian carbines are easier to get at the States than over here! I own a Underwood made Carbine and would like to have a good Bavarian. But they have a horrible price or they are looking like scrap.
