Question Indian Wars 1890: What rifles?

My grandfather fought in the Indian Wars in the Sioux Campaign in North Dakota in 1890 to 1982. I was wondering if anyone here might know what type rifle he would have carried. He was a dispatch rider in the 1st Cavalry. I'm guessing a Springfield Model 1873, but I really am only guessing.

So that would be a Springfield Model 1873 trapdoor carbine? I'll do some research. Will I find them rare? Expensive?
    ...And thanks.

Either one will be expensive. Trapdoor prices have skyrocketed. However a later model trapdoor carbine would be more appropriate than a 73. As for the Colt, if you want one of indian war vintage, forget about it! but the modern ones aren't cheap either. Still you can easily find ones made in the 1950's and aside from inspectors maks, they are the same.
