    1917 Bore Gage

Anyone have a copy of the special instructions published on using the C3940 Breech Bore Gage on the M1917? Some time ago a post identified several Army publications that had it starting around 1938 or so, and up to about 1943. I'm looking for a copy or PDF of any one of the publications.
    Thanks,
    Randy

According to a commercial reprint I have of an Ordnance Field Service publication (by Rock Island Armory from Feb. 1943) titled "Base Shop Data - U.S. Rifle, Cal. .30, M1917", there are no "special instructions" for using this gage with the M1917 - use it exactly the same as on an M1903 Springfield. Sight down the edge of the reciever ring and read the gage number - "6" meaning .306 was the limit before replacement was required.

By the way, if the muzzle measured over .0302, the barrel was to be replaced.

No chamber pitting was allowed, and no individual pits bigger than 5/16" in the bore.

    Hope this helps,
    CC

PS - This reprint is easily found online or at larger gun shows - I have seen it on eBay

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

for $7.99 and free shipping. He only has 488 left, so you better hurry!!

    Bore gage

Thanks, who would have thought the dimensions between two entirely different rifle models would be the same. Length of front ring, lug dimensions etc. I'm surprised, thanks again,
    Randy
