New 'Gunshow Inland' - need opinions and comments

I picked up this 5.4 Inland at a gun show on Saturday. I saw quite a few carbines there, mostly commercial versions, though. This Inland had some features that caught my eye, so I made what I thought was a pretty good deal on it. The vendor had bought it from a guy about two weeks ago at another show. The guy's Dad had passed away and left it to him, along with some other guns that he didn't want to keep - a sad, but familiar story. The gun looks like it hasn't been apart, or cleaned for quite awhile. I'm interested to hear comments and/or opinions on whether the barrel date is about right for the s/n, rear sight, barrel band, slide, sling, stock, and anything else that you Inland owners might recognize. I think the sling is unique in a way - I've never seen another one quite like it. I'm hiding some things by being selective about the pictures, but will reveal more if there's interest. I still haven't broken it down to see what's inside. Thanks! - Bob

The metal looks like GM(Inland) just made it yesterday. The wood, what can I say? Would that sandpaper had never been developed. But, if I have a choice I'd take good metal every time.

That has got to be the carbine bargain of the month.... CONGRATS on that! Its a very nice carbine. Bore does look like it can use some serious help. Please let us know what is on the inside one you "pop" her open. I never seem to get that lucky on finding the estate stuff.

I would assume that the barrel band is a clear replacement. There are grooves forward of the front sight where the sight was removed once.

Are there any arsenal stamps on the stock?

I would also be curious to see if the wear lines on the bolt and slide match those on the receiver in their respected areas.

Yeah, I figure the original band was probably a Type 2 - at least if it was Type 3, it probably woudn't be an SA (post war only?). A 30-06 M2 Ball didn't go in very far when I checked at the show, but it might be because of all the lint! I did put a piece of white paper in the breech and took a look at it with a light - rifling looks really good. I thought maybe the s/n is too high for a flat bolt, but not sure - at least it's blued. If you look really close at the right side of picture #2, there's a hint there of an "enhancement" that I didn't really need, but may just leave it the way it is - part of it's history, right? How about that rear sight - ought to be something else (PI)? It really looks like it came on it. The one thing that really caught my eye was no parkeriziing in the punch mark on the receiver just behind the bolt. Somewhere on the forum there's a thread about that - need to find it. Does anyone know if the DCM/NRA carbines had slings and oilers with them. I'm thinking this may have been a DCM carbine and maybe came from the original purchaser. No arsenal stamps on the stock, but it's been sanded quite a bit. Is that sling well mark HI? The webbing on the sling is close, but it's a repro. I believe it's a very early repro - maybe close to 45 years old. The sling has a very unique mark under the fold at the front band. Does anyone want to guess as to what that mark is? Thanks! - Bob

I have an Inland in that serial number range with the same barrel date. It was bought off a table full of hunting guns about 25 years ago, and appears all original. It has the type II barrel band, push safety, blued flat bolt, and milled adjustable rear sight. Stock is not sanded and all parts are correctly coded.

So what is "unique"? It looks pretty standard but I am new to the M1 Carbine and want to learn. It does appear to be installed backward, at least the part that goes through the buckle.

Is that checkering on the stock at the wrist? The carbine looks okay for a 5.4 with the bayo band added later. May have had a Type II band and round bolt, but appears to only updated, not re-arsenaled. I would strip the shellac of the stock, sand out the checkering, stain it and oil with linseed oil. If the bolt gauges out good, I would probably leave it and everything else as-is. Should be an excellent shooter.
