17 inches long. Push button release. 31 written on heel Fluted blade First thought it was a plug bayonet. Can't be with push buttons.

Any help would be appreciated

Pretty sure that is French, but can't tell you for what rifle.

Looks like an early one as they didnt have the holes in them to allow the locks to be released when one bayonet was used to join two rifles together. later models had a hole added. There are also variatiosn in the knurling that can help date the tings roughly.

Many thanks, apparently cadets got very found of locking two rifles together using the bayonet, it is stored reversed in the rifle leaving one mounting sticking out that anotehr rifle coudl then be fitted too. Not havign a MAS i am not sure but the tale sounds good, possibly the hole was added to allow cleaning but the tale sounds better ;-)

I have a photograph in one of my books. The French also had a modified version of this bayonet to use as the sections flag pole! Longer bayonet with a fixing for a small flag or pennant!
