    Unusual Garand Stock Holes

I just received a field grade CMPicon M1icon. The receiver is SA in the 2.69 million neighborhood. The date on the barrel is within a month of the date I found on the receiver (March 1944), so I suspect it is original. The stock, however, is a replacement as the only marking it has is the DAS eagle, which I understand was used much later.

Now getting to the point: There are 2 unusual (to me anyway) holes on the left side of the stock. I'm not sure if these are defects or intentionally made. The shape and orientation of the holes seem too regular/similar to be random defects. Have a look at the pics. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Classic dent caused by the op-rod handle of another Garandicon pressing into the wood.
See this link showing how the were packed on pallets.

Wow, great pics! They're stacked like cord-wood! Appreciate your reply Trickster.

As for steaming them out, I think I'll leave them... part of this rifle's journey.

If you use a home steam machine, available in Wal-Mart, you can steam these out for the most part.
