    1903 rear sight.

How much play in the windage would have been allowed befor the sight base and worm wheel would've been replaced?.

My 1903 MK1 has nearly one graduation play in it.

I see the parts are available from Numrich {they ship to Australiaicon that's all}.

    Cheers
    Foz.

If there is a specification for replacement, I have not come across it. In a practical sense, so long as the windage knob spring is able to maintain the sight in the correct position, then the sight is functional. The "slop" or backlash you feel by pressing on the movable base is normal and is exactly the reason for the spring. However, the spring is small, so it is important that the moveable base and fixed base be clean and lubricated so the spring can do its job. Old cosmolineicon and years of dirt, grime, damage, and corrosion frequently limit the spring from doing its job properly.

By the way, the slop or backlash I am speaking of is only in the rotational direction that the windage screw controls. Play in other directions like a teeter-totter are a different issue with different solutions.

One graduation on the M1905 rear sight for the M1903 is = to a "point". On the M1903 a "point" is 4 MOA, i.e. 4 inches per 100 yards.
