Announcement M1903/1903A3/A4 Picture of the Day?

Hello all, Jake Holman brought up the idea of putting together a "M1903/1903A3/A4 Picture of the Day sub-forum to compliment this forum and was supported by a few members. There are few things needed however. The numero uno thing is a committed volunteer to post not just, but mainly period photos of this wonderful rifle, be it WWI, WWII, training or what have you. That volunteer will most likely want/need a dedicated and committed back-up support volunteer member to post in his/her absence. The "team" may even choose to make up a schedule between themselves to ensure photos are posted.

This is only in the inquiry stage and depending on the interest and commitment of a volunteer or volunteer team and logistical site review, this may be something we can do. Thanks

I'm interested, but that's "period" picture vs. just a "neat picture of a M1903, right? I've got a few, but I don't know about every day!!

I was thinking more along the lines of "The 1903 Springfield in service"
This would be a place to post "original" pictures from your personal collection.
Not to slight anyone, but it's pretty easy to find pictures on the net to copy and post.
This would keep the copy infringement thing for happening. I'm not suggesting someone
would do that knowingly, but it does happen. Rather, it would be a place to post rare, never seen before pics including family member in service with there 03's. Of course it would
include 03's, 03-A3's, 03-A4 etc. etc. The post should be pinned. I do however like the idea
that someone should over see it or moderate it.
I originally bounced the idea off Rick. I wasn't ready at that time, as my hot water heater
blew a cork in my office and wiped out the walls and half of the floor. Everything had to be remover and stored until the repairs could be completed. I'm still looking at another month
now. I don't even know where all my pictures at the moment, but they are safe.
The interest is still there. Any else that's interested can chime in, your welcome to!

The only problem with that is dedicating an entire forum to what would essentially end up as a very few photos. If that is all that is wanted it would be best just to make a post with your photo.

I was really thinking of it being a sticky. It's called "pinned" on another board I'm on. I'm opened to anything. It just was an idea. It could still be called Springfields in Service and let contributors post any pictures of 03's. I figured keeping it period photos would make it unique. If you want let people post pictures of anything 03, then would that include personal pics of everyones rifles as well as 03 gear and accouterments

Rick, do you have an idea of who may be willing to help? Just a thought, most if not all the M1 Garand/M14/M1Aicon Picture of the Day are taken from the web. And we are not talking just "period photos" but any photo of interest of the 1903 and it's variants. Below is an example of one of some Navy sailors.

Quality of the picture is not great, time has not been kind. My father with the 114th Engineers at Camp Beauregard La, circa August 1917. They were required to turn in M1903's when transferred overseas to the AEF in 1918 and draw M1917's. From what I can see this is a M1903 with the old long bayonet and has the look of an early M1903.

114th Engineers in Franceicon with 1917's.
The originals of these pictures are very small (1" x 1 1/2") and the resolution of the camera is not great but they are WWI.

There are probably several peope with pictures of the M1903 in service. Maybe a "picture of the week" or some title that wouldn't bespeak the necessity of coming up with an original M1903 picture every day.

Great idea! I would like to contribute, but don't want the sole responsibility (work, wife, 4 kids ages 10-7 ).

I can definitely take the time to help find photos.

    I'd contribute one a week!
