    New guy with a question.

    Howdy ya'll

I have a stock my Pop gave me when I was probably 9 or 10, now some 35 yrs later I decided to build the rifle out. The stock is a finger groove, straight grip model complete with furniture. I just bought a sporterized 1903, serial #902xxx, with a barrel date of 7 18.
Last night I went to swap the stocks out. When I set the barreled action into the stock I noticed a cone just ahead of the reciever that wouldn't let the action go all the way down. Looking at the sporter stock I can tell it's been relieved to fit this piece. Thought I would have to do the same on my stock but decided to hold off.
This morning I looked at a bunch of images of barreled actions and NONE have the cone shape mine has. Is this cone an add on so the barrel would float in the sporterized stock? It's a s shaped 03 finger groove stock that's been shortened and has no barrel band or hand guard. Sorry I don't have pic's, didn't think about it last night.
    Thanks for any help.

I am not aware of any "cone" as you describe. The "cone" is apparently an add-on or modification done by a previous owner. Before proceeding further, I recommend that you post pictures so that we can advise you further.

    Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Thanks for the help fellas. I too believe the cone was an add on by whoever sporterized the stock. Hadn't been able to get this site on my phone's internet to upload pics but think I have enough info from here and other sources. Plan now is to get the cone off and get the rifle to a gunsmith, hopefully Saturday, to see what can be done about the loose barrel and have head space checked.

If I'm picturing this right,,, the cone is on the bottom of the barrel,,,,,,? Sounds like you got a drill rifle that had a plug welded in the chamber and someone has knocked it out. Is it a weld spot sticking out of the bottom of the barrel? When you mention loose barrel, thars a red flag!

Is he talking about the barrel just ahead of the receiver ring? The thick area of the chamber just ahead of the shank? If the sporter stock was for another Mauser???then you would have to relieve the wood. Or perhaps the barrel's a special made one with non standard contour.
    Regards, Jim

Andrew posted a picture on another forum and there is indeed a "cone" on the receiver end of the barrel. I think he'd better look for another barreled receiver to fit the stock.
