Advice needed on sticking draw tube of Canadian Telescope Observing Sniper's CMK1

I need some advice on how to cure a sticking draw tube on a Canadian Telescope Observing Sniper's CMK1. I figured that oil would not be a good thing to use on the aluminium tube!

Sounds like the felts might be folded and/or dirty........see our friend in Wales. He has the correct felt as well. The thickness of the felt is important.

From the pam on the Tel. Sct Regt, it says to use french chalk to lubricate the draws. I'd imagine the same wouldn't hurt the CMK1....

Do you still have the old Captain Pugwash/Scout Reg scopes in the system Son? We still have some doing the rounds but not in the sniper div any more. We've just got rid of the last(?) of the big bit popular SWIFT scopes. Popular that is, but not waterproof or remotely dust proof either. But at least they could be dried out. If only they could be 'dusted' out too! The Kowa 6 series at the moment seem to be at least waterproof but the ocular end certainly ain't dustproof as in desert dust! The OG lens assembly comes off which isn't a good idea but We lock them together with grub screws

I'm not sure what the scopes are being used at the moment... never really has the chance to study one and find out. I understand the Scout Reg. scopes went by the board in the late eighties. We don't take care of any of that stuff unless it's mounted.

Ditto the french chalk, as a first option....french chalk...the same stuff they use to mark steel, get it at a welding supplier, file it into dust using a metal file or something, dust it onto the surface of the draws and work it back and forth. I understand that repacking the 'glands'(sp?) is the only alternative, and not to be taken on lighty.

Re-packing the glands is the only true cure although I'm not familiar with these scopes in question. But like newbie says, packing the glands is not to be undertaken lightly. This how we used to do it. Remove all traces of the old packing and the glue (it looked and smelled like a brown french polish type varnish to me....) and cut the new 'FELT, hatters' to shape. Then we'd put a couple of strips of thin double backed sticky tape on it and stick it inside the gland, roll it in place across the work bench with a wood roller on the inside. Then you've got to work the draw in without pulling the packing felt away.

Easy after a few tries.

An alternative to all this chalk is silicon grease. But once this old fashioned, cheap aluminium has started to pick up, then beware..........
