12-227 Garand Picture of the Day

Clearing ash-coated Iwo Jima of its grim Japaneseicon defenders was a grind unlike anything US marines had ever experienced before.

The second picture reminded me of the following link, it's from archive footage of 3rd Marine Division Armorers on Iwo restoring weapons for return to front line duty.

Stock Footage - United States 3rd Marine Division armorers repair rifles inside tents on Iwo Jima, during World War II.

There is No Sound, after viewing the first click on the Next Video link and you'll see the armorers test fire a BAR, M1's and Carbines before returning to service. At about the 2 minute mark of the 2nd video, they're both < 3 minutes long, you'll see an armorer immerse entire rifles in a solution ostensibly to preserve them for later issue, must be a light lubricant, not extremely flammable as the guy is smoking right over the tank. Now I know why some stocks are really dark.

You'll have to believe me on this one...that's how we used to do it. And we never got blown up. It was neat footage though. Down in a crater for a test pit. One BAR didn't work so well and that would be frustrating...
    Regards, Jim

I believe this handler has a Garand, it was a challenge to find it.

I saw either a Military Channel or History Channel special on the Pacific War Dogs and saw a lot of Garands.
