    L42A1 L1A1 Scope Markings

    Attachment 37399Attachment 37400Attachment 37401Attachment 37402Attachment 37403Attachment 37404

I hope that someone can shed some light on the markings on the scope on my L42...

You will notice from the pictures that it is a 1945 dated Mk3 Kershaw with the original designation barred out as you would expect.

The new markings don't follow the norm though.
    Rather than having:
    OS 2429 GA
    TEL STRT STG L1A1
    1240-99-963-2063

    It reads:
    TEL STG SIGHTING L1A1
    1240-99-963-2063

A mistake when it was engraved with the STG and SIGHTING?
    No OS 2429 GA?
It doesn't look like a modern addition done at the local engravers - Am I worrying unnecessarily?

The scope is housed in a 1973 dated tin with original, correct (contempory) scope number stencilled on the front and the elevation turret is the correct 'M' marked one

    Any opions gratefully received

I think you're worrying unnecessarily - your scope probably just went through the engravers on a Friday afternoon...

    Enjoy it.

There's just a little aside to your telescope markings being engraved what is actually UNDER the original markings as opposed to the far more common ABOVE the original markings. I think that I have already mentioned this in the past BUT.............

Originally, it was mooted that for the L42 rifle combination, the telescope would be rotated through 90 degrees clockwise so that the deflection drum would sit at the top of the telescope and become the RANGE drum and the now rotated range drum would sit on the right hand side to become the more readily accessible deflection drum. On that basis, the original instructions were that the re-engraved L1A1 marks would be engraved below the original marks so that when the scope was rotated, the NEW markings would be on the top - as per the originals.

Things didn't turn out that way for several reasons (read back a thousand threads for the reason.......) and the instruction was cancelled because the new designation couldn't be read because it was obscured by the bracket! It gets worse.......... The NEW designation was to be engraved ABOVE the original, where it remains to this day.

You'll occasionally find the original designation, then BELOW that, the new designation engraved before the final format was codified, then RE-engraved in the new, codified position ABOVE the original engraved Mk3 designation. Is that all about as clear as mud?

    Next question!

Thanks Roger, for the re-assurance and Peter for the explaination.

Just when you think you think you know a bit about the subject along comes another piece of info to keep you on your toes.

Just goes to show what a wonderful place this forum is for us Enfield fans....

    Thanks again
