    Strange M1 S/N ???

Ok guys here it is. My dad just bought an M1icon. It's S/N is 1,339,xxx.
The strange thigs is that the 2nd 3 looks like it has been ground off and the restamped again as a 3. none of the other #'s have been touched. It has a Winchester reciver with correct drawing # and correct Winchester barrel plus some mis matched parts. Any ideas?????
    Puzzled!

    Winchester serial number

Winchester and some SA serial number stamps are sometimes uneven or even in some examples sideways. Here is an early example of a three digit.

It would help to have a photo or two for better idAttachment 37988

Three digit...that would make it just above the educational series?? I'd love to see the visual of the number the OP speaks of. Can't imagine why it would be altered.
    Regards, Jim

Jim, It's not a " three digit", the serial is 1339xxx as per the OP.

Check it out...the post before mine is RCS displaying a Winchester numbered xxx931. That's just above the educational series.

We haven't established ANYTHING about the OPs rifle...except no pics.

BRITTURB, welcome to Milsups.com. We are pleased to have you with us. If possible, post a photo of the heal so we can see the serial number and how it is stamped. None of us here redact serial numbers but if it is something you feel you must do, put a small piece of black tape over the last numbers. Please enjoy, there are a grip of great guys here!

    Restamp

Are you sure the restamp is a 3 and not an 8? We have shown several of those, reportedly remarked by a West Coast dealer to conceal their origin.

You can find the article referred to by Bob Seijasicon in the Summer 2010 GCAicon Journal, " IHC Serial Overstrikes" by Dave McClain. It is an interesting read. While this article deals specificly with IHC rifles, suerly there could be rifles manufactured by others with the same restamp.
