Unusual 1903 Handguard, I think

I'm interested in identifying this handguard which appears to be from some Springfield 1903 rifle. Any thoughts?

I'd say a modified service handguard.

The finish is old, not new. It has a similar patina to some other unmolested wood I've seen. I wonder what purpose it was modified for. I've had it for at least seven or eight years.

cut down by other then the military, i have a few just like it in a box..

Almost certainly.

At first, it looked like an old high-hump with the sight groove, that had been shaved down. But there is no fixture slot underneath? Must be later.

I have several too. They were done mostly in the late 1950's thru the late 1960's.

Keep in mind a commercial rifle in those days was about $129.00. Average guys were making about 75.00-100.00 per week.

A surplus 03 series rifle was anywhere from $19.00 to maybe $40.00-50.00, depending upon the time period and dealer. Alteration was in the $15.00 range. It made sense to make up a shooting rifle.
