No.4 barrel dates

When were barrel dates used on No.4's? My all matching 1943 BSA has a 1943 barrel date. My 1944 LB FTR'd by FAZ in 1949 has a British barrel without a date. Were all original made no.4's marked on the barrel with the date but FTR's were not?

I haven't seen them all, but both usually have some sort of date.
