Shortened p07 Lithgow bayo

I just traded into this P07 Lithgow bayonet and it is different from all my other P07s in that it has been shortened and the tip now has a false edge which all looks to be factory or unit level modifications. Any information regarding this bato would be appreciated. Thanks!

I havent got the book at hand but would say its a trials or the 1907 cut down version for the Owen Sub Machine gun, The No1 Mk 1 was a new blade but IIRC the later one was a standard 1907 bayonet cut down.

Cold nasty weather on a Sunday pays off and answers some questions. This bayonet from what I gather is a S&L 10" blade made for testing a bayonet for the Owen sub machine gun. These early production bayos where cutdown standard P07s while later models had a shorter 8" blade and the fuller was 5". MkI being the trials, MkI* and MkI** being the last of that production before MkI/I being purpose made Owen's bayonet. Have I got it correct fellas?

S&L stands for shortened and lightened, along with a needed bayo for the Owen a shortend bayo was needed for the experimental shortened and lightened SMLE prototype that was the forerunner of the No.5.

Just a couple of points (if you'll excuse the poor pun.........). The trouble with a cut down bayonet as shown is that with a hacksaw, a file and the ubiquitous set of number/letter stamps, there could be a zillion 'special' shortened and lightened bayonets. So who and how can you truly identify the real McCoy?

The next point is nomenclature as it can become confusing as illustrated by Mike in Para 1 above. The stars after the mark/type, as in Mk1** is simply another way of saying Mk1/2. So a Mk1* rifle (or bayonet or pistol) was simply a Mk1/1 and was followed, as we all know, by the Mk1/2 (or the Mk1**) then the Mk1/3 (....yep...., you got it, the Mk1***)

Armourers soon learned that a No2 Mk1** pistol was simply a Mk1/2 revolver and in service, rarely used the term 'star' preferring to use the 'oblique' word such as '..... who has taken the two mark one oblique three rifles from the rack........'

Note it has Indian MkI** stamps so if those are not added by Bubba this is an interestign Indian cut down and not the Owen. The first star shows Shortened the second the false edge, lots of these around but first one i have seen using an Aussie 07 as the starter. interesting piece. Also the color is correct for a later Indian rework.
