I know MK III models were converted to 7.62, but can MK I models be converted also?

The simple answer is that they CAN be, but why bother........

There were MAJOR problems with converting Mk1's

.308/7.62 is a moe economical choice for eeloading given component availability and factory loads.

Maybe, but you WONT get a MK.I drum sight calibrated for 7.62mm! Why not convert a MKII? It has been done, obviously! But if you are aware of the pitfalls in converting ANY of the Bren series. You may wish to rethink your potential idea?

Why not obtain an Ex SADF converted variant & work with that?........................

You won't see any 7.62mm L4 parts kits available.

I don't think South African 7.62 Bren parts kits have ever been available in the US ? so may not be an option for the OP.
