USGI WWII sling for M1 Garand rifle

Hello everybody.

Was the USGI canvas sling used during late WWII years (1944) with M1 Garand rifles in replacement of the USGI M1907 leather sling ?
Or was it used only in post-WWII era (Korea, Vietnam) instead ?

We have photos of the canvas sling in WW2 but very few. I have a couple dated 1944. The vets asked don't seem to remember any canvas at all. That means to me that it's very limited use in WW2. We also have lots of pics of leather 1907 slings in Korea so they were still used in great quantity then.

Depending on the color. I have a very nice khaki flat buckle sling (no date I can see). OD #7 came later IIRC. I also seem to remember the canvas khaki flat buckle sling being as early as 1942.

That is a WWI era sling. Note the inspector's initials under the maker mark. WWII Model 1907 slings did not have inspector's initials.

As the others have noted, 1942 dated Boyt slings will be found with both brass and steel frogs.

There's no date I can make out, the rule of thumb is brass frogs are WW1 and steel are WW2. The one pictured could easily go on an earlier number gun. I've had both that had no date. The early slings were surplus WW1, and issued in the early days so my 1941 issue LL has a WW1 sling. I don't recall ever seeing a canvas sling as early as Bill mentioned, but I know there was a long discussion here a couple years ago about it. I never saw a flat slider OD3 sling...I did see some Danish slings with flat sliders I almost bought as early slings. Flat sliders and all.

I truly think that it would be the luck of the draw at QM as to what you would get. A high traffic QM would go through lots, and an out of the way QM would have brass frog slings in 1945...

Photo shows a "new" 1944 dated canvas sling, not that rare to find - also have seen 1943 dated canvas.

My other photo shows a Boyt 1942 sling with brass hooks - they changed to steel hooks in the same yearAttachment 43242Attachment 43243

Leather slings were not dated in the 1930's and some were also undated during WW2
