Just what exactly do I have here?

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong category, but I'm at a loss. I'm not entirely certain what this rifle it, despite the fact I feel I should know just at a glance. The barrel has be modified to be non-firing, and the owner claims it's military, but we're at a loss exactly what it is. I want to say it's an M1903, but something doesn't feel right about that.Attachment 42670Attachment 42671Attachment 42672Attachment 42673Attachment 42674Attachment 42675Attachment 42676

Well, try saying that it is an early P14 from Winchester and you should feel a lot better!
