13-151 Garand Picture of the Day

    Rifle Mark Falls to McMillan
Capt. William W. McMillan, world pistol champion, won the Marine Corps rifle match today at Camp Matthews as he and 18 other shooters smashed the match record.

Capt. McMillan and V.D. Mitchell, acting gunnery sergeant who led yesterday, each finished with a score of 589 out of a possible 600. Ties are decided in favor of the shooter with the highest score on the final day of firing. Capt. McMillan outshot Mitchell today, 296-295.

The captain clinched the title on his last shot when he fired a five-point bullseye. Mitchell just missed the bulls eye and took a four.

The 589 total shattered the Marine Corps match record of 576, set last year by Maj. Robert E. Dawson, as well as all other existing Marine Corps records for any event.

Michael Pietroforte, acting gunnery sergeant, was third with 587 and also topped all previous records. Nineteen shooters bettered 576 and six others equaled that score.

So the captain and 18 others broke the record (by a wide margin) in 1959 that was set just the previous year. Were there some new national match rifle modifications allowed in '59 that were not available in '58?

The short answer is no. NM sights were assembled on new NMs for the first time, but they were available and permitted from 1957.

thanks. From the link article it looks like '60 was the big year of changes, not '59. I guess everyone trained better, got a good night sleep, and had their Wheaties.

From personal experience, it could have been a better "dope" day.
