Look for Peter Laidlericon's articles in the Knowledge Libraryicon.

Bedding isn't something for the beginner...it takes practice and experience to get right...

This is correct. Read Peter Laidlericon's article 5 times, look at your stock, read the article again, get the tools you'll need, read the article again and then buy an extra stock and dive in. To my knowledge there is no way you can get "practice and experience" with out taking a chance and getting your hands dirty. If there is I wish some one would speak up and divulge the secret for the good of us all.

    I find them rather uncomfortable.
Wouldn't you rather bed something softer and warmer, like a female?

    Sorry, just couldn't help myself.

    Hi .....

I'm not exactly sure what the problem might be, but in case you don't already have them, perhaps download a complete set of manuals for the Lee Enfield from the MKLicon, which includes operating and armourer's maintenance instructions.

The manuals may be found in the Technical Articles for Milsurp Collectors and Re-loaders (click here)

2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Manuals (click here)

    Complete Set includes:

    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Data Summary
    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Parts Identification List
    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Operating Instructions
    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Equipment Description
    - 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Maintenance Instructions

1991 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Manuals (click here)

    Complete Set includes:

    - 1991 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Operating Instructions
    - 1991 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Maintenance Instructions

Note: The difference between the 1991 set of No.4 Manuals and 2002 No.4 (All Marks) .303 Rifle Manuals, is that the 1991 manual contains armourer's information on how to properly "bed" the No.4 rifle, whereas the newer 2002 manual does not.

Here's another article in the MKLicon ...

The Canadian Marksman (Bedding the 7.62mm No.4 Rifle) - 1965

    ... and .....

You also might want to try our Google CSE custom search engine located in the top right corner below the words "Advanced Search". It only searches our site using Google techniques and can be quite efficient. For example, in your case, type in the words enfield bedding and see what happens ..

There's a lot of old discussion threads and pics on the subject.

    Doug

S.B.: In addition to the marvelous material listed by Badger, I've also found a book by member RJW from New Zealandicon very helpful to me in my ongoing effort to understand what makes these rifles tick. It's called "The 2012 Complete Book on Lee Enfield Accurizing" (Roger Wadham) and is easy to find on e-bay. The book is not about restoration, rather accurizing for target shooting, but it includes lots of clear photos and discussion of stock vs. custom bedding techniques. Some of the classic accurizing techniques do reveal a lot about how the standard furniture functions.
