There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.
He didn't have a clue on what that helmet would be worth in 50 years. If it was SS it might bring as high as $20K!
But then again no one had much of an idea back then

When in Greece in 1971 I could have bought all the Germanhelmets I wanted for $25.00 each. Fallschirmjager helmets were $50.00. Man if I could go back.

There's a little museum located in Eldred, PA that is full of items just like that from attics and basements everywhere. Best museum this side of the National WWII museum! Also has a lot of goodies from a Russianvet from the Eastern Front.
And there again, an 03 in the midst of a bunch of Garands.
Mauser alright but not your typical K98. Sling attaches at the bottom of the stock not through the side and a straight bolt. Maybe a G98???

Ooops. That would make sense, since he's got a Germanhelmet on. My bad.
