91/30 Sniper Help

I have a nice 91/30 ex-sniper. I would like a good 'smith to re-convert it back to a real PU sniper. I have the scope and mounts. Just need a good 'smith. Any leads? Thank you.

They really aren't that hard to do it yourself. You need a drill, a tap and die set and some cutting oil. Took me about half an hour and I've never done anything like ti before. Would I do it on anything else besides a Mosin Nagant, probably not but I had $79 in the rifle and it would still shoot if I messed up a hole.

Surely if it is a genuine ex-sniper, then it must already have the holes? They may have been plugged, but you will still be able to see the correct position.
The corollary to this remark is:
If there is no sign of any mounting holes, then maybe it is not a one-time sniper.

Assuming that it was genuinely set up with a PU scope, once upon a time, but the holes have been plugged - hopefully by inserting threaded stubs and filing them flush with the receiver wall - then it might even be possible to simply drill through the plugs and remove them with a broken-tap extractor.

In any case, I agree with Aragorn. You ought to be able to do this yourself.

The holes are plugged but they weld the blasted things before filing them down. At least that's what they did with mine. Generally, the only way to tell it's an ex-sniper is by looking inside the receiver. You can see the holes from the inside.

Oh dear! Well, at least one can measure up pretty well where the holes need to be.

I took a samco global ex sniper and restored it to sniper grade, it came with the holes and two pins ,topped it with a 43 progress scope and mount and redid the stock here are a few pics of before and after . here are how she came from samco

And here she is now after i redid her was a 279.00 all matching 44 izzy fom samco global arms ex sniper, now she looks awesome has a perfect .308 dia bore , no counterbore and mint bore all rifling and lands are immaculate. All numbers match on rifle , scope is not the original of course but a 43 progress i picked up. Great shooting rifle.

you should be able to pop those welds out from the inside out , i have had to do it before then retap it is all, make sure you get the measurement right for the base holes and pins tho.or it will be become a project that seems to never end.I always make sure i have the base in hand before i start on one myself. Repro scopes usually have the wrong spaceing for some of the bases that were used in the day , try and stick with authentic or accumounts , they seem to get em damn close to original spacing for holes and pins. The cheaper aftermarket repros are always off .unless you are starting with an untapped rifle i would stick with authentic if you can find one but acuumounts has about the best repro bases on market. And here is one i built from a 42 izzy, r guns bent bolt 155.00 shotgun news rifle, drilled and tapped it, put a laminated stock that came off a finn capture rifle after i redid it, and a 44 KAZAN scope on top, drilling and tapping these old mosins is not that hard , notching the stock was harder for the base than drilling and tapping it, sitting with my 1940 tula in a laminated stock i picked up. If you need any help with that project ill be glad to try and help you out ,i build these on a regular basis the mosin snipers, they are easy to do just takes some time and patience.

here are some pics of the 42 with Kazan scope in finn capture stock sitting with a 1940 tula in a laminate, the bore on the 42 sniper measures .312, i just load it with 303 and 7.7 .311 to .312 dia bullets. Great shooter.
