Restoration?

I've noticed there are a few companies offering restored carbines. either base on parts supplied by you or complete guns. companies like MIltec, James River, Dean's and Fulton Armory. I'm having trouble finding the gun i want but i'm not sure it makes sense to spend this kind of money.
Anyone here have experience with these folks or have advice for an M1 carbine newbie?

The companies mentioned appear to charge a goodly price for a reconditioned carbine. If cost is one of your concerns, I see GI rebuilt carbines carbine selling for a lot less. Imports for even less. You could try the sales forums, or a local gun show in your area. I know there are a lot of carbine collectors in Florida. You might find something really nice for the same money.

It's funny how we all have different labels for the same thing. I would call them "mixed parts commercial rebuilds with new commercial wood".

But, what else can they do? New, original USGI parts & wood are now scarce, & what they can find is often well worn. Inspection, gauging, refinishing, assembling, & testing is mostly done 1 at a time, not on an assembly line. So, no way can it be cheap. Quality of the work will vary, depending upon the company. And, none will hold their value like the real thing, even an arsenal rebuilt USGI rifle.

if you had to pick one company to buy a restored/refurbed gun from is there any reason to prefer one particular company? they all look and sound great on their web sites.

For the money you spend on a Miltech or other rebuild, you could buy an original, unmessed with (pre upgrades) WW II carbine. I sold an original flip sight 90% Inland for $1450 earlier this year. It was "as left the factory" configuration.

I agree your better off getting and original if you want a collector piece or a USGI rebuilt carbine for a shooter. They are out there and available if you just take some time to look.

Pot belly M2 stock, 30 round magazine. Be sure to check the internal parts.

i don't know if this will help in identifying this particular carbine but i've now been told that it has an inland receiver and barrel with a 6.2 million serial number and a 10/44 stamp. the 30 rnd mag is pictured because the seller/dealer is trying to help me find a carbine i can convert to M2 spec. says that he's had it apart, examined it thoroughly and all is well. he's got gauges so i'll try and determine TE and Me when i look at it.
