Oddball situation at the local dealer...

I had posted before (on the other forum) asking for info on the relative value of a consigned 1.6 million Springfield that turned out to be a Blue Sky repatriot. The rifle was marked at $700, but, as the post below shows, the owner was willing to go lower. Here was the original post:

I've come across a 1.6 million (May '43) Springfield Garand in a gun shop:
The usual assortment of parts - mostly Springfield
Milled trigger guard
Extremely tight, smooth trigger
Tight, crisp locking mechanism
Hooded rear site
Cleanly re-parkerized receiver with barrel apparently attached when re-parked (parked rim of chamber)
Barrel fails the bullet wear test (all the way up to the cartridge) and I have no clue as to head space
Very nice stock furniture, one color, sanded at some point - no cartouches visible
Newish-looking web sling
Cleaning kit in butt storage area
The whole rifle is clean and well-cared for
Owner will let it go for $600.
Is that worth the bux?

After several replies on CSP saying it wasn't worth the price with a used-up barrel, I went back to the store and asked the salesman to call the owner and ask if he would take $500. He made the call. When he returned, he said,

"The owner says that since the CMP now has a waiting list (news to me), he is withdrawing the offer to go down to $600 and now wants the full original $700."

Holy mackerel. I said "thanks" and left.

I'm having a little trouble getting to a match. I can't find a local range that will allow me to demonstrate putting 50 rounds safely downrange and fill out the CMP form, so the CMP option has become a little rough for me. On the advice of the forum I went down to a gun show this weekend because there are usually deals there. The best deal I found was a mixmaster for $1099. Hello.

I suppose the best idea is to just keep my eyes open for a while?

Keep your eyes peeled. One will come up. CMP has a waiting list now? Hum, news to me too.

The whole story sounds as if the seller was really in the mood to make bundle on a rifle that wasn't worth it and rather than sell to someone who is in the know, he'll wait for some sucker to come by and take the deal and think he came out ahead. Who needs it!

You can get a field grade from CMP for $495.00 plus shipping or a service grade for $595.00 plus shipping. Oh yeah and they won't be Blue Sky imports!

I'm willing to spring for a Service Grade but because of sickness in the family I'm having a little trouble scheduling anything in my life, including shooting in a high-power match. It's a bit of a pain, but I'll perservere! Worse stuff has happened.

CMP has a waiting list now? Hum, news to me too.

They don't have a waiting list - they are still digging out from the deluge of Winchester orders mailed on Dec 1st last year.

You can mail in an order and get into line, which I suspect will get shorter soon.

You have two weeks to make an in-person trip to one of the stores before they close down for the 2d half of March.

FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

Bob, your 50-shot record of competitive shooting can be high-power rifle, or a .22 caliber rimfire. You can shoot pistol, or skeet, it doesn't matter. Get out that .22 and fire off some rounds. A copy of your scorebook is all that you need to satisfy CMP rules. HTH, Karl

Be smart and pass on this one. Bying a garand is exsiting news four everyone but you realy want to look for the perfect rifle to come along. The smart choice is the CMP service grade. The smart money will go their.
