Mauser 98 Stock "Issue"?

I was surprised when I disassembled this Mauser 98 that the front end of the stock comes apart at the barrel band. None of the schematics I've seen indicate this is correct, but it appears to be made this way. Can anyone educate me on whether this is correct, or some modification gone awry? I have a few more pics if it will help.

Done at end of WWII by a vet. He could then stuff into his duffle bag. Desirable for sure!

Calif-Steve, thanks for a quick and helpful reply! Now, when you say "desirable" does that put this rifle into the "really neat shooter" category, or the "leave it in the cabinet to admire" category?

I guess the forend will "walk" off the rifle as you fire it. Most of the vets would sporterize the rifle and a true "duffle cut" is a rare bird. Certainly hang on to it. Is this a family gun or a gunshow find?
