Hi Snafu, any info on the photos?.....Frank
The bottom pic is Ulo School at Arnhem. The picture is part of the IWM collection.
Bottom pic looks like a weapons container dragged perhaps into cover to access the weapons cache and the front soldier appears to have a Sten may be para's! just judging by their kit.
I've found the following description of the second picture:
A U.S. soldier stands in the middle of rubble in the Monument of the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig after they attacked the city on April 18, 1945. The huge monument commemorating the defeat of Napoleon in 1813 was one of the last strongholds in the city to surrender. One hundred and fifty SS fanatics with ammunition and foodstuffs stored in the structure to last three months dug themselves in and were determined to hold out as long as their supplies. American First Army artillery eventually blasted the SS troops into surrender.
The particular location for the pic is the crypt on the first floor. The building is currently under restoration.

The Arnhem picture does indeed have an equipment container near the doorway. You can see all the padding scattered near it. Those are Paras, and yes, the front one is carrying a MkV STEN.

I was thinking the guy in the rear in the 2nd picture looked to be carrying an SMLE.
A SMLE is the No 1 Mk III rifle. He has an No 4 Mk I rifle.
