Long Branch 1949 competition #4

Just found one of the factory long Branch 303 competition rifles.It is consecutively serial numbered to the one featured in the Knowledge Library ,5G is electro penciled on receiver with C inside oval stamp.5 groove barrel.
Any more info on these?Were they a group purchase by the DCRA?What year were they built?
I know of another 49 with the 5G mark serial #91L38xx,also another 49 with a stamped 5G not electro pencil,but this one was converted to 7.62
Were they all 49's?How many were built?Were most later converted to 7.62?

Any more info??

My 6 groove LB #4 target rifle has a 6 stamped on the bayonet lug.

My '43 dated Long Branch DCRA conversion is also "5G" marked (electropencil) along with a "C" in an oval. From my records I have recorded that about 2,000 were converted.

Yes,about 2000 DCRA 7.62 conversions were built.
I was wondering how many of the original competition rifles in 303 were built?.
Most were later converted to 7.62.
Was contacted last night about another 1943 LB with the 5G mark,also in 7.62.
So,not all were 1949's

Check the MKL for the rifle built one serial number before yours ..

As previously discussed with superbee mine is a 1949 91L51xx marked 5Gp converted to 7.62 DCRA

I think 200 of the so called 5G marked "factory specials" were produced if memory serves but I don';t remember the source of the information. It may have been Bill Wylde. I have 91L2908 / DCRA 7.62 #1440.

It's not the electric pencil engraved '5G' (5Groove) or '6G'(6Groove) marking that are important it's the "Oval 'C'" marking.

I suspect that the 5G and 6G markings were either control markings for an unknown accuracy experiment, or an indication (similar to the TR marking commonly found on Brit No4T actions) that the rifle was acceptable for conversion to a competition standard.

CFTO instructions direct that only 5groove and 6groove rifles were acceptable for conversion to .303 competition target rifles.

No4MK1*/3 (F) FTR
1944. Has NRC and G. Rapie 57 craved into rear top handguard. Still chambered in .303 with Parker-Hale
rear sight.
51 , serial number and 3ftr on left wrist band
Not sure if it a DCRA, or just a built competition rifle, but it shoots
