    .U. marked flip base

I know some of you have seen this.
But seeing that there are members here that were not part of the CSPicon crowd, I wanted to post this picture of a flip sight base I bought.
It was one of 3 bases that I found in a dealers junk box at a small local show. It wasn't until after cleaning the crud out of it that I noticed the .U. stamping.
Anyone care to pull their flip sight apart to look inside?
    Yea....I didn't think so.
No telling how many may have been marked.

    Regards

Here's the "S" marking on it.
It's the one on the left.

    Some Thoughts for the day...

I received a note from a fellow CC member that in CC Newsletter #112 there is a spotters report of a Flip Sight Base marked with a .U. on the bottom of it. I don't have all the News Letters. Hopefully one day I can buy up the back issues.

If the spotters report is correct, then Underwood marked some (all ? ) bases on the bottom or inside. Most if not all of their leafs were also marked with the .U.

Were both the base and leaf marked with the .U. because these were seperate parts?
Are all the Underwood bases marked?

Only way to know would be to knock the leaf off...I doubt many would do that.
Underwood was known to supply both Flip Sight leafs and Bases to Inland.
Is it possible that bases made to be passed on were marked inside or on the bottom?
War Baby on page 358 states that Underwood supplied to Inland the following:
    12-28-43......4000 Rear Sight Leafs
    4-3-44.........5394 Rear Sight Leafs
    4-3-44.........2233 Rear Sight Assemblies

I own a Inland 5,061,238 with barrel date of 3-44. This carbine has a .U. marked leaf on it. So these parts were given to Inland just prior to or about the time that this one was assembled. That's the one when we were painting the new Michigan State Forensic Lab that I had a Technician examine under a micro scope thingy before they were open for business. He could see that the base of the metal between the dovetails was 'PUSHED' in only one direction....from right to left. I'm confident that Flip Sight is original to that carbine.
    BUT....Is the Base Marked with a .U. ???
One day IF I ever start drinking again......I'm gonna knock that pin off and see for myself......I swear.

A MEMORIAL WEEKEND TO ALL !!
