Thread: 1898 Krag

Here is my one and only Krag. It's a Model 1898 rifle. 1901 cartouche date. I believe it is stocked in Italian walnut. It has 1st variation small peep 1901 rear sights. It shoots better than I can and is a favorite to take to the range.

Mike,
Nice rifle and the stock is Italian walnut.

I was collecting only Krag carbines when I dicovered those Italian walnut stocks about a year or so ago. Now I own 4 of them and looking for more.

Thanks for posting the pictures

Thanks Chuck! I know that you had requested some more photos when I posted about this rifle a few weeks ago over on Jouster. The sun was bright the other day and I thought it a good opportunity for some more pictures. The stock does appear a lot lighter in bright sunlight and with your comment helps to put to rest any doubts about it being Italian walnut or not. Are there anymore views you would like to see?

The Italian stocks that I have seen appear to be more of a yellow tint. I have one stock that is figured like the one pictured and another that I would absolutely say is Italian. The Italian is quite yellow.

From what I've seen Italian walnut can be from light yellow to dark with tiger strips.
Top rifle is one of Bill Mooks yellow rifles. The bottom rifle was picked up at the last Baltimore show.

Chuck,

Those rifles are absolutely beautiful!! I think the one on the bottom may be the prettiest Krag I have ever laid eyes on! Who could have ever let that one go? I would like to see more close-up pictures if you ever get the time. Again, fantastic looking rifles.

Those are some outstanding krag rifles. I have the back two-thirds of one like the bottom one. Some people should not own saws.

Hi Chuck,
I believe I saw that 1898 at Baltimore. I think this may also be one of Bill Mook's rifles.

Hi Mike
I was thinking of going to Baltimore when I wrote that's where the bottom rifle came from, it did not.
Remember that dark dirty & ugly rifle I showed you at Tulsa last fall? Well, that's the bottom rifle. Cleaned up really nice,eh!
