My Dad in 1942

This is a little off the daily norm but hey it has several Garands in the picture.

A little about my Dad. He was working at Aberdeen Proving Group when the war started and had a draft deferral. After the 2nd month of the war he could no longer sit at home and not help with the effort. He told me his supervisor did everything he could to persuade him not to go. Dad said he just couldn't do it so off to the Army recruiting office he went.

Here is a partial picture of my Dad's company in 1942. I know he was at Fort AP Hill after boot camp. The unit was then sent to Wisconsin for winter training. He said that they were given some new equipment to test and that about 40% of the unit disabled from cold injuries.

Once in England he was assigned to the 4th ID. He landed at Utah Beech on D +2. He mad it all the way to the Siegfried Line before being knocked out. He spent the remainder of the war driving trucks. He said he was okay with that after all that he had been trough.

He passed in August of 2005 and I miss him a lot. So when my Mom showed me this group picture I just had to share.

Dad is number 120. His name is Frank C. Hartman.

They were supposed to be having a "GI" party which is why all of their bunks are outside. I guess that there is always a little time for some horsin' around. Oh, yeah, the one in white was one of their cooks.

His first assignment from Camp Robinson was occupied Germany. Since they didn't need rifleman they made him part of the Constabulary Forces. He retired 21 years later.

Is there any one of us out there that doesn't have a pic from basic with his rifle with bayonet fixed? Mine is analogue or I'd put it here...and it's and FN...

Most of my pictures got lost along the way. Most during a divorce. I do have an AR15A1 and an M7 bayonet, I suppose I could have my wife take a snap of a older me posing in a most menacing way. I'll put it on my bucket list.
