SG 1.827 Barrel & Receiver markings

I have a slide and a receiver with the letter J on them and a barrel that I can't idenify. Any ideas ?

Is that an I-BR at the back (on top) of the barrel nearest the breech? If it is, it's one of the 5000 button rifle barrels Inland installed late in production. I have a 6.975xxx with one of those barrels. It has no date stamp of any kind, but does have an Inland proof "p" and the famous hieroglyphics on the barrel flat. I hope this helps.

I think your receiver was made very close to the same date as mine. Yours is an S'G' isn't it? My barrel is an Underwood 8-43. - Bob

Well I thought is was I-PR but after re-looking I think it is a BR, someone else who hasn't seen it said they thought it was a un-marked Inland as well. Thanks Chris

Bruce pretty much covered it in his post. Paraphrasing WarBaby III, some early S'G' receivers were marked there with the single digit 3 or 5 - later they switched over from numbers to many single letters ranging from A-Z. Carbine Club research indicates there was no definite pattern with the letters in relation to the serial numbers. I'll have to check whether my slide has the letter J. - Bob

Reference I-BR marking can be found in CC newsletter #360p12. Usage was in Spring of 1945. My Inland 6,974### has this barrel. John

The J stamps are just inspection type stamps and mean nothing. The barrel is an Inland which S'G' did use during their production. These came from BLC and S'G' used about 37,000 of them between Sept. 1943 and Dec. 1943.

Chris, I don't believe it to be the original barrel. There were only 5000 of the I-BR made as a trial type button rifling in the spring of '45. Your S'G' is long before '45. John
