Question on 7,62x39mm cartridges

I have a box of East German 7,62x39mm cartridges that have a reduced velocity for training. Will these cartridges functionAttachment 57431 in a semi auto rifle ?

Ain't seen any of those in ages. You know I simply can't remember if they'll run in a semi or not. I want to say yes but don't quote me on that. My CRS syndrone is getting worse with every B-day.

Common sense would indicate they would work in a semi-auto because this cartridge is only used in semi or full autos. Even blank cartridges have enough oomph to operate the action.

But then there isn't as much common sense in the world as we all might like.

These are reduced power training/gallery loads and are not as powerful as standard issue rounds so common sense should also indicate that the only way to reduce power is to reduce the powder charge and in turn this can and most often does reduce the port pressure below the level required to reliably operate the action. So, when it comes to reduced power rounds working a gas operated gun some will but most won't cycle the action .
I don't shoot a whole lot of blanks but of all the 5.56mm, .30 carbine, 7.62 NATO and 30-06 I have shot none had the oomph to operate the action without a blank firing adapter attached. Some of the European wooden bulleted blanks might but I've never shot any of those.

There are blanks for the 7,62x39mm weapons. My photo shows a US manufactured Lake City blank on the left and a Chinese manufactured blank on the right. Also have a blank firing attachment for the AK47 which screws on the end of the barrel. The diameter is around 7/8 inch and the length is 15/16 inch, the hole in the center is 5mm. It would appear that a blank attachment is required for the weapon to function.

Being somewhat of a cartridge collector, I really did not want to open the plastic wrap of the East German training cartridges to have them tested to see if they would operate the AK47 or SKSAttachment 57470

Yes Robert, blanks require the use of a blank fire attachment (BFA) to hold the pressure buck enough to cycle the weapon.

I do not believe the reduced charge rounds produce enough pressure to cycle the action on the AKM or SKS rifles.

In an AKM, almost always yes. I don't know about other rifles.

The bullet is very light, around 60gr +/- ... plastic core inside a copper coated steel jacket.
