"Designated marksman" might be more appropriate than "sniper".

The term Sniper or Designated marksman does not appear in the TO&E for Marine units.

I found some ww2 references to Scout sniper platoons.

nothing on designated marksman for the WW2 time frame.

Although the fellow at our club (WW2 & Korea) refered to himself as a Sniper.

His skill backed up his claim.
