    Rear sight question

I have an 1898 rifle that has been cut down to carbine length. It has a 1901 carbine rear sight. Can anyone tell me what the lever is for at the front of the sight? Windage? She shoots right on at 100 yds but hits about 2" right. I can't upload pix as I'm using an iPad. Thanks!

The lever clamps the movable base to adjust for windage. When released, the base moves freely. There are index marks at rear part of base. (Righty tighty - Lefty loosey).

I had to take mine right off the carbine to clean it. It needed a complete disassembly so it can move freely...

A little soaking or tooth-brushing with Hoppe's #9 and a slight tap (on the right side of the lever) with a small plastic mallet, usually does the trick. Best done by removing sight from barrel, as others have advised.
