Caught in action at the airport where we were working on the N1K2 Shiden kai. I used to do the same thing, touch and go's in the grassy area between the runway and a taxiway. Old photo that's been on the side of my toolbox for years. Spotting is from water sprayed on the print at some point.




Could be milsurps, who knows?

Driving down the shore when I was a kid a plane that pulls the signs over the beach landed in the medium right next to our car on the Garden state parkway. I'd say doing this sort of thing is well worth the practice.

About 15 years ago a Cessna twin landed on the freeway about a half mile in front of me. Scared the hell out of me, but ruined the underwear of the truck driver just behind him!

Taildraggers seem easier to land in the grass than on paved surfaces to me and some others I know. Not something lightly contemplated with tricycle gear a/c.

I learned to fly in a J3 and an L4(military version of the J3 with more "windows") in 1955.
Easy to fly and will almost land itself. Always thought I'd like to have one, but never did.
It was part of a college course.

Got to fly the Aeronca Chief being fueled in the left background a couple of times. Much preferred the Cubs, but only because they were better for light abuse and can be flown with the door open. (Can't remember flying a Cub with the door closed but once.) The Chief would be a better airplane for getting from Point A to Point B, and I like it better than most Cessnas.

I've flown a Chief once. Don't remember anything bad about it, but I like the Cessna 150 better.
