My poor M1907 sling

I've had this M1907 sling (dated 1918) for about 7 years now and have been treating it with Pecards but now find out that this is a no-no. I've just noticed that my sling is now just about cracked all the way through. Is there anything that can be done to save a leather sling that is cracked nearly in two?

I don't think the Pecards cracked it. That's just time and previous mistreatment. Once they get there, there's not much you can do. I avoid the old ones because of that very reason. Unless it's about new, and then I'd only use it for display. Once it's like that...not much to do.

Best not to use an original sling, after a few years of heavy use and varying conditions of use - weather, how long it was stored with the sling tight as many collectors insist on mounting them because it was the way the military did it when on issue, etc. As Jim said, the sling cracked due to it's age, leather dries out over time if not treated correctly using pure neatsfoot oil. The Pecards didn't cause the problem but it didn't help either. Even neatsfoot oil will not help the problem after a certain point so it is best to set it aside for study as an example of the correct sling for the '03 Springfield, Garand and the British No.4 sniper.
