Interesting AK-47 chest pouch (Chinese I think) and a damaged AK-47 magazine which I also believe is early Chinese manufacture.

The magazine has a smaller than 30 caliber hole that entered the floor plate of a loaded magazine. Looks like a 5,56mm bullet that struck the floorplate, jammed the follower tightAttachment 63218Attachment 63219Attachment 63220 and all the loaded cartridges were dumped out

Is that blood on the flaps or just rust?

Just dirt on the flaps but there is a large circular spot on the back, the owner might have had a bad day

That Chest Pouch would go very nicely with this TYPE 56 Rifle.....

Very nice AK. I had several of that kind in the small arms school in Gagetown NB, there were originally 6 folding stock rifles too. That slowly decreased to 1...but anywayzzz, nice Type 56.

We had a large collection at the Brigade HQ and Int cell in Malaya sent down from Vung Tau and we were always asking the Battalions in Nui Dat to look out for a fabricated body AKM to examine. But so far as I recall we never got one. Did the VC or NVA get AKM's

Not sure if they did get many AKM's? There is a small batch of Vietnam bring-backs in New Zealand, all the ones I have seen so far have been the milled receiver TYPE 56, most have the chambers drilled and bolt faces welded. This one is unmolested except for the inscription scratched onto the butt 3PL V COY 4 - 11- 70 and I believe the carved symbol means "Red Dragon". If anyone can confirm it, that would be great.

The symbol is the Mah jong symbol for the red Dragon or China

That character is used to represent the "axis" or "centre" and is HALF of the name of China. It is "sort-of" pronounced "Choong" and the other symbol that should follow it, (if writing the name, "China") is "Quoc", meaning "Kingdom" or similar. Hence the term "Middle Kingdom" being used for China. However, the translation "central" or "pivotal", i.e., that around which all else revolves, (and all that is implicit in that name), is probably more accurate.

Maybe the last "official" owner of this particular AK was noisily interrupted in mid "carve".

Well, I can one up U-all.
I have both a chicom AK and a chicom mag chest pouch. Both are Viet Nam bring backs. The AK was registered during the 68 amnesty.
Unfortunately the guy who brought the AK back let the feds conn him into welding it up when he registered it.
Here it is along with my other VN bring backs. Have trophy papers on all but one of the K98ks.
