15-250 Garand Picture of the Day

With the frozen Yalu River and snowy Manchurian hills at their backs, Cpl. Mayford J. Gadner, left, and Pfc. Tommie Robinson from New Mexico, stand guard near Hyesanjin on Korea's northeastern front, Dec. 2, 1950. The GIs are members of the U.S. 7th Division.

There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.

    Yalu

Our reaching the Yalu really scared the Chinese and led them to invade. They knew the US wanted to overthrow the Communist regime, were afraid we would use North Korea as the platform to launch an invasion across the river. It also scared the Russians who were allied with their Chinese fellow-Communists. Recent revelations say they threatened to use atomic bombs if we crossed the river as MacArthur wanted to do. He then proposed seeding a 20-mile wide strip with radioactive plutonium so nothing could walk on the ground for 500 years. History!
