Does the hammer lock back if you manually operate the slide (no ammo)?

If you field strip the rifle, you can look at the trigger assembly and see how the hammer is caught by the sear when the bolt pushes it down during recoil.

i will take closer look ive had it apart looks like some wear on a couple of the parts that lock the hammer i think i will replace what looks worn is just kind of funny shoots first bullet then reloads second but does not lock hammer open. just thought might be simple problem with the weapon .i thing when it cycles under powder charge its to fast to catch the lock .i did try and file very slightly but didnt help thanks for responce.

If it cycles the empty out and reloads the chamber, then it might be a sear or hammer relationship. As in someone trying to make it F/A by altering it...

Make sure the bolt is closing all the way. If in doubt then clean the carbine including the recesses where the bolt lugs come to rest and be sure the bolt is also clean. Check the recoil spring to be sure it's not compressed. Should be about 10 1/4 inches long. If shorter then replace the spring with a new USGI spring and not one of the so called hi speed springs.

Check to see it the sear spring is gummed up or even rusted. obviously check the wear on hammer and sear. Also check if the sear binds on receiver or trigger. look where sear is widest.
